Alec I totally understand where you are coming from, my problem with individuals being hoisted into positions of authority is the fear of a repeat of the Adams mistake,republicans really have only ourselves to blame for this ,we collectively give this man to much head and he in turn has lost the run of himself either through" turning" or agents of influence,either way the struggle and the deaths of those brave lads on hunger strike may have been saved had a tighter rein been kept on Adams and a closer watch kept on his cronies,we need to encourage those with leadership qualities but we must never let them become kings/queens,

I took it for granted that both of you would understand that I would not want to repeat the old mistakes of elevating a single person to the position of absoluteness. However, in all leadership groups a person with charisma and intellect tends to stand out from the crowd. All great revolutionary movements had their great revolutionary leaders. However, to protect against the emergence of cultism it is necessary to uphold the democratic principles of transparency and accountability. Of equal importance, is the organisational model and leadership style e.g democratic centralism vs democratic collectivism. The greater the levels of collective participation in the decision making process the better. Never again should we allow the cult of personality to corrupt us.

That is so true Anthony,Alec is quite right when he calls for leadership to unite this fragmented republican family, however we are where we are today because of a single charismatic leader,we cant ever go down that road again I hope.no doubt someone of the calibre of Connolly or Mac Diarmada,or Mellows will emerge to give voice to modern republicanism and possibly a woman to .but hopefully never as Anthony says to lead from a pedestal

I have long doubted the merit of that type of leader. Before long it ends upon a pedestal and is able to lead people to places they swore never to go and denounced others for going there. They even devour the revolutionaries. An example here is the Committee killing off the hunger strikers.

An enjoyable piece. What Republicanism is lacking today is a significant charismatic leader with the ability to pull together all of the various threads in a single progressive democrartic movement. We desperately need a modren day Connolly or Mellows to inspire the people to greater things.

Love reading Seans posts his oration about the life and times of Liam Mellows is not only interesting but very relevant to what is happening here today,his quotation re., Connolly,that if the british had not executed Connolly then the Free Staters would have so very true, it seems the more things change the more they stay the same ,that old adage is so very true,as for the natural resources of this country I believe it is not in the gift of individual government ministers to sell or give away our childrens future inheritance, these operations if they are not to benefit the Irish nation as a whole should be closed by whatever means necessary,future generations will be grateful. again Sean brilliant post..
